A truly fine follow up to the original "Painkiller".It's a fresh take on the horror based FPS game.Highly original expansive environments packed with frantic battle against hordes of really nasty, twisted enemies. The graphics are great and the storyline is progressive and clear.I was hooked from the start!Did I mention the wide array of wicked ( and unbelievably cool )weapons? You won't find any 45's here. The game also challenges you to find and obtain holy artifacts in order to unlock different Tarot cards ,each giving/having different abilities or qualities .This also adds the element of plenty of level headed strategy.Overall, the "Painkiller" games offer much more than blasting a boatload of nasties. You need strategy, guts and brains to get through these bad boys. There is a very large community of PK fans on the net with sites and forums for info.,help and things you otherwise definately wouldn't know to make the gameplay that much greater.Have a Blast!Read full review
As an adult PC gamer, I tend to look for games with quality graphics and good storylines. This game had neither. Although I overlooked the fact this game came out in 2004, I still expected a decent story given the game's description and the fact it came out after Half Life. I was sorely dissapointed. Painkiller turned out to be a simple shooter with stickman graphics. It reminded me of the first Unreal Tournament but with hordes attacking you instead of single opponents. The graphics were the biggest dissapointment, however. All the NPC's in the game displayed some semblance of ragdoll physics, but all were mostly very rigid or still. The sound effects were greatly overdone...to the point of being irritating most times. The begining movie intro describing the story was also irritating in the sense it was long and boring. It seemed mostly aimed at trying to tap in to those pre teen sexual desires of most young boys rather than explaining the pretext to the story. All in all, the game is repetitous, giving the gamer rewards at the end of each killing spree in the definate walled environment of each level. There is no exploration here. No multiple endings. No believeable environments. Just point shoot and run.Read full review
Painkiller is a throwback game, back to the good old days of Doom when it was kill everything you see and find a few secrets. It is not a simple game however, there are elements to the game that make it truly great. For one, the guns in the game are some of the coolest you will find in any shooting game. All weapons have two firing modes, each mode is unique and helpful in certain situations. Probably the most useful is the shotgun's freeze, stopping enemies in their tracks and allowing a one shot kill. Another unique feature of the game is the soul collecting. After you kill an enemy they leave a soul behind, which you should collect. The soul replenishes some of your health, but also if you collect 65 souls you enter into beserk mode, where nothing hurts you and you kill with ease. This is very unique and cool. Yet another feature of the game is the tarot cards, which allow you to enter into levels with special skills, such as 2 times damage. The tarot cards require you to use your gold pieces (which are scattered all around the levels), but allow for a deeper strategy. There are so many unique levels and features, that you must buy this game to see them all. You will enjoy this game!Read full review
Wow. This is a game I picked up because of a review at Escapist Magazine's website by Ben "Yahtzee" Crowshaw. His reviews are great entertainment, and they usually savage any video game unlucky enough to get on his radar. So when he declared this one of his favorite games, I had to check it out. My thoughts are, a more worthy sequel to the "Doom" franchise than "Doom 3" by far.
Amazing FPS with a lot of secrets that keep it interesting. Although released in 05 I decided to purchase it after having bought and played Painkiller Overdose. The Gold Edition combines Painkiller with the Battle out of Hell expansion pack. This game blew me away, how did I miss it 3 years ago? Every time I step away from the game my mind wanders back and in no time I'm back in the middle of the action. Which reminds me.. my game is calling.
